What is the SPE Utility Interactive Mapping Application?

The SPE Interactive Mapping is a powerful, easy-to-use, and very effective portal application to display and view utilities not only on a map but also via satellite and Point-of-View photography that utilizes Google Maps and Google Earth.

Why does SPE Interactive Mapping use Google Maps and Google Earth?

Google Maps and Google Earth are free software that provides the views for the application. Our presentation of the integration of the city’s utilities is copyrighted.

Will this application work in other browsers?

Although the SPE Utility Mapping Application will work with other browsers such as Firefox and Chrome, it was designed to work with Internet Explorer 7+, if other browsers are used, some display issues could be present. These compatibility issues will be fixed in the future.

The Google Earth View on the right side is not showing, what should I do?

If Google Earth view is not showing up, the Google Earth Plugin is probably not loaded into the web browser. A link is provided on the System Requirements page for this download, after the plugin is downloaded and installed, the web browser must be restarted to refresh the application.

Can you print the various views?

There is not a print function as of now, but since this application is still under development a print function for each view will be implemented.

What should I do if the view windows are not correct?

If the views inside the window appear to be not correct, simply refresh the browser.

Can I find a specific location with a street address using this application?

A Google search toolbar is located in the bottom left corner of the map view, you can simply type in the address and a marker will appear on the map where that address exists.

Who may I contact about support for this application?

You may contact though email: support@speng.com.

Can custom layouts be prepared?

Yes, custom layouts can be made by SPE to suit your utility needs.

What utilities can be mapped?

Any utilities can be mapped and overlaid to view on this application. Water and sewer are typical, but some cities have electric and/or natural gas systems.

What if the Google images are updated in the future?

Yes, if the images are updated by Google, then the images that are viewed by the application are updated as well.

When can you use this application?

Since this is a web application, it can be accessed anytime depending on your internet connectivity. Each system will have a password specific to their system.

How many fields can be created per utility icon?

There are an unlimited amount of fields, or attributes, which can be used to describe each utility icon.

What are the top 10 reasons a community should have mapping?

1. Saves time and money to be able to locate a specific utility when the need arises.

2. You are not reliant on the one senior person on staff who has vast utility knowledge “in his head”.

3. Utilities are located during the field work that no one knew existed.

4. When a water main breaks the utility crew needs to quickly find the valves to isolate the break.

5. When a public sewer backs up to a customer’s plumbing the utility crew does not need to waste time looking for buried or paved over manholes.

6. The utility superintendent can use mapping to direct (from office or home) his work crews to a particular location.

7. Fire department personnel can utilize for fire protection planning and ISO rating reports.

8. Can be used in asset management, condition assessment, and O&M planning.

9. Can be used related to new development, system expansion, and long term planning.

10. The 16 county NGWPD requires water and sewer mapping. The GA EPD is expected to require mapping of all systems in the near future.

Why is SPE’s Interactive Mapping better than conventional mapping?

It provides a user friendly digital system to allow access and interaction of utility mapping by numerous utility staff or fire department personnel, without any special software.
