Interactive Mapping Summary

Stevenson & Palmer Engineering, Inc. (SPE) has developed a tremendous enhancement Interactive Mappingto Utility Mapping for communities who already have GPS/GIS based utility mapping.  The SPE Interactive Mapping utilizes free software and photographic imagery provided by Google Maps and Google Earth, plus additional attributes for which SPE has obtained a license from Google.  Google Maps and Google Earth are web-based software applications that allow us to use your existing GPS/GIS or AutoCAD maps for importation, manipulation, integration, and displaying of your existing utility information.

Interactive Mapping is a portal application which displays and views utility information as an overlay on satellite imagery and Point-of-View photography provided by Google Earth.  The mapping system utilizes three (3) views obtainable from Google:  Map View, a basic street map; Earth View, the satellite photographic imagery; and Street View, a 360 degree pan-able view taken approximately every 50 feet along city streets.

The end-product is a web-based site hosted by SPE, which features easy navigation utilizing Map View.  SPE takes greatest advantage of Earth View by overlaying the community’s existing utility system (typically water and sewer) complete with interactive structure labels and attribute fields.  SPE incorporates all three views on one screen allowing easy viewing at close range of utility structures in Street View.  Interactive Mapping can be utilized by utility staff at all levels since it is web-based and may be of particular use to the community’s public works and fire departments.

Interactive Mapping provides an easy-to-use system that is intuitive for navigating and viewing:

  • Utility locations (i.e. water mains, gravity sewer pipe lines, natural gas lines, and force mains)
  • Utility structures (i.e. fire hydrants, water valves, manholes, pump stations, and water towers)
  • Maintenance record data (i.e. condition assessment and dates of service)
  • Customizable GIS overlays

Each structure (manholes, sewer pipes, fire hydrants, water valves, water pipes, etc.) is labeled per the community’s desired labeling or numbering system.  Attributes (specific data about each structure) can be easily customized based on the community’s desires.  The above ground structures such as fire hydrants and manholes can be viewed if displayed by Google Streetview.  In addition, recurring and un-scheduled maintenance can be easily be recorded in a pull-down tab in excel format.  Other features such as tax parcel overlay, ‘search’, and field location using hand-held devices are incorporated.

The cost to enhance a community’s utility mapping to SPE’s Interactive Mapping is very inexpensive.  The cost will vary based on the number of GPS points we import and the extent of manual input for structure attributes required.  For a community of 5000 population with updated GIS mapping the fee could be less than $10,000.  SPE will then host and maintain the community’s Interactive Mapping for a nominal quarterly fee.
